Embracing Leadership—From Fear to Faithful Service

Leadership has always had a way of finding me. From childhood through school and into adulthood, I have often been singled out to lead. Whether as a class monitress, deputy head girl in primary school, speaker in my senior six class, vice president of our student association at university, or even leading a regional chapter of remarkable lawyers—leadership seemed to pursue me.

Interestingly, most of these positions came without my volunteering. I was identified and appointed, sometimes even through compromise, where I would agree to deputize rather than take the lead role. Yet, once appointed, I always felt compelled to give my very best.

Looking back, I am grateful for the people who saw my potential and chose to fan it into flame. Such people are pivotal in one’s journey, as they help unearth hidden capabilities and set the stage for growth.

Reflecting on Leadership and Responsibility

Over the recent Christmas break, I found myself reflecting deeply on my leadership journey. I realized that my earlier hesitation to step into leadership roles stemmed from an awareness of the weight and responsibility that comes with such positions. At the time, I lacked an active source from which to draw strength, leaving me feeling inadequate and unsure of my ability to lead effectively.

This reflection led me to think about how Jesus conducted His earthly ministry. He consistently set Himself apart to spend time with God, recognizing Him as the ultimate source of wisdom, strength, and direction. Whether it was nurturing visions, navigating personalities, discerning pitfalls, or offering strategies grounded in wisdom, Jesus always seemed to operate ahead of the game.

His secret? Staying connected to the source—God.

The Source of True Leadership Strength

I came to a profound realization: my initial fears about leadership were rooted in self-reliance. Relying on my own strength often left me feeling insufficient, as is the case for anyone who depends solely on themselves.

But I have since discovered that it takes grace—the grace of God—to lead effectively. This grace is not only sufficient but also comes fully equipped with every resource a leader might need. Among these resources, the ability to lead with love stands out as the most essential.

While there are countless books on leadership, I have found the most sustainable source of wisdom and knowledge to be the Word of God. It offers timeless principles, insights, and guidance for anyone called to lead.

Stepping Out in Faith

Are you feeling called to lead but struggling with fear? Whether at home, in the workplace, among peers, in business, or any other sphere, do you have a source to draw from?

I invite you to take a bold step this year—plug into God. He is the ultimate source of strength, wisdom, and grace. Step out fearlessly, trusting that God will unravel all the potential hidden within you—not just for your fulfillment but for the benefit of others and, most importantly, for His glory.

You don’t have to rely on yourself. Leadership is not about having all the answers; it’s about being connected to the One who does. Breathe. Trust. Lead. And watch what God can do through you!
